Use Plant Food Every Two Weeks
|
 |
Container plantings need sunlight, water and plant food and they will give you beautiful foliage and blooms all summer long.
A container’s soil should never be allowed to dry out completely. Sometimes watering is required daily, when the sun it hottest in mid-summer and especially if the wind is blowing. In cooler temperatures though, watering may be done every second day without any problems. I prefer the 'finger in the dirt' method of determining whether my containers need watering. If the dirt feels moist to my finger, I don't water...if it feels dry, I do. Pretty scientific, huh?

My biggest container gardening secret is giving them plant food every two weeks. Miracle-Gro is the food of choice for me and it has never let me down.
|
Every second week, I head out with my Miracle-Gro granules inside a canning jar. I can’t stand trying to scoop it out of those little, plastic sacks it comes in. Years ago, I would mix the granules in my full watering can; 1 Tablespoon per gallon of water. Then all that was left to do was to give the containers a generous drink until all the soil was moist.
Well, these days, I have MANY more containers than ever before and the old method of mixing in my watering can is too slow. My solution is to take a Tablespoon of the ‘blue magic’ and just sprinkle it around the soil in the container. Then water as usual with a hose. Miracle-Gro dissolves instantly, so this method is working out super for me.

- If the container is small, it
gets only half a scoop on the soil (the green tablespoon that comes in the
package).
- Medium sized containers get a full scoop and super-sized pots get 2 scoops.
- Miracle-Gro is very gentle so you can error a bit long without any harm.
