History of Blue Jeans
The history of blue jeans is definitely associated with hard-working American people, but the denim used to make blue jeans
actually originated in the countries of India and France and eventually made its way here to America. How did blue jeans come
to be so popular in American culture?
The history of blue jeans starts with the origin of denim which is attributed to two separate places at or around the 1500s. One place is a town in France called Nimes where
a fabric was created and fashioned into pants that the sailors of Genoa wore, which was originally a coarse blend of cotton and wool fibers.
The country of India is also credited with the origin of denim, where work dungarees were made from denim fabric for the sailors of Dhunga.
By the 18th century, denim was manufactured from 100% cotton fibers.
Who Invented Blue Jeans ?
During the 1850s, a man by the name of Levi Strauss was fashioning and selling tents and wagon covers from a rough canvas type fabric.
It quickly became clear the gold miners needed pants, so Strauss became the man who invented blue jeans by creating his own style of pants
which he began selling to the miners who worked in California. When the miners complained about the rough fabric, he used instead the fabric
from Nimes, France. The pants were nicknamed "blue jeans".
The Blue Jeans Invention
Is Improved Upon and Patented
In the late 1870s, Strauss was approached by a tailor named Jacob Davis about patenting his idea of putting rivets in the jeans he
was fashioning for workers at that time. Jacobs had discovered if he placed rivets at the pocket corners and at the top of the button
fly, these areas of strain were reinforced and helped the garment to last longer.
Strauss and Jacobs went into business together and began producing "waist overalls" which eventually turned into the jeans we
know and love today. This improved blue jeans invention, or simply known as blue jeans, were sold under the brand name of "Levi's"
which is still a well-recognized name for top quality garments today.
For years, jeans and denim were associated with the working class and worn by workers of every kind. Nowadays, Americans who
perform manual labor on a daily basis still choose blue jeans for their work attire, but even those in Hollywood can be seen sporting
their favorite style of blue jeans as everyday attire.
