Lane Cedar Chest Makeover ~ Part 1

lane cedar chest

Just….plain…..ugly….one of my attempts….that failed. Yep…I have those…

All of my pants are housed in this Lane cedar chest. It’s full. My fat pants, skinny pants and everything in between pants are piled so high I have to sit on the lid to get it completely latched. And OK, there are more fat pants than skinny ones…but you never know if those little guys might be needed again…so I keep ‘em. I live in a dream world…and I like it here.

I’ve been meaning to tackle this project for quite some time…a year…or more. This Lane cedar chest was originally laminate, “blonde“…ugly enough as it was, but then I managed to make it even more hideous by crackle painting it…in the same blondie color over a dark brown. What was I thinking???

The inside is cedar…of course. Even I…the brush toting, crazy woman…have painting boundaries and would never befoul the inside of a cedar chest!

lane cedar chestFirst, I spray painted the hardware with a pewter/hammer finish. The hardware was originally some sort of fake brass…another feature I didn’t mind painting over the first time around.

I didn’t even bother removing the handles before painting ‘em. Too lazy…

lane cedar chestI hardly ever use painter’s tape…takes too much time and I’m impatient. So, I dipped a small artists brush in my favorite “Antique White” paint and carefully outlined each piece. Trust me, it was faster than taping everything!

lane cedar chestI love the hammered finish of this spray paint on the handles. And the crackles, drips and dings that are showing through the white paint are yummy…to me.

lane cedar chestMore crackled texture…just my thing!

lane cedar chestI brushed lightly over this “seam” in the wood drawer to keep the brown paint showing…I really like that.

Did you sand it down or just paint right over the laminate? I have a similar chest that is also that “blonde” color. I want to paint it but I am having a hard time finding out if I need to sand it down first. Yours turned out great!! Did you do a coat of primer/two of paint?

Hi Meg, I painted it first with primer, but you can also use what is called “liquid sandpaper” …very easy to use and takes the place of messy sanding. It’s a liquid that you wipe on with a rag. Just wear rubber gloves and apply with a rag…wash it all over the piece you are going to paint and it eats a bit at the glossy finish, making it ready for paint :) Hope that helps! D

I am trying to find some information on the Lane cedar chest you restored. I have the same cedar chest. Can you tell me where you found it. I am trying to find an old advertisement featuring this hope chest. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. Love how you restored the chest.

Hello Donna! I have to admit that I honestly know nothing about this cedar chest, aside from the fact that it is a Lane. My father-in-law and step-mother-in-law gave it to me about 20 years ago. And of course it was much older than 20! It belonged to my step-mom-in-law and I will ask her for some details on it as soon as I can! Hopefully, I’ll have more to share when I hear back from her. Thank you for your inquiry and I am looking forward to finding some answers for you! DKink
