English country decor is welcoming and comfortable. It takes much of its charm from the English rural countryside of times past...farmhouses that were comfortable and practical at the same time. Lines are simple and functional. Colors are bright and cheery.
English country style lets you blend many things like family photos, antiques, paintings and other collectibles into one cohesive design.
The entire effect of English country decor is to create a comfortable style to live in. You shouldn't be afraid to ruin anything by making yourself at home in this room.

For color choices, take a look at a well designed abundant English cottage garden. Nature is your palette. Shades of gold, white, red, green, blue, peach, yellow...they are all possible.
Choose 3 or 4 colors to predominate in your room. Others can be added in minute amounts.
Floral fabrics are popular with English country style decorating, but be careful not to overdo it. Balance the florals with solid colors, gingham and other patterns. You're going for an informal look that is inviting and comfortable. Ruffles and lace are appropriate if they aren't overdone.
Tables may be covered with solid colored cloths or small prints. Fabric choices may include damasks, chintz and other floral patterns. Wall colors should be neutral or pastel to set off the other decorations in the room.

Your English style furniture should be wood. Simple construction is preferred. The wood can be dark or light.
Chairs and sofas should be upholstered and deep with comfortable cushions. Throw pillows add to the color and comfort of the furniture.
Distressed furniture is also allowed in this design. If you don't have any timeworn pieces, feel free to paint a piece of furniture and then lightly sand off areas that may develop wear and tear to create a faux distressed look. Brass hardware is often the choice for drawer pulls and door knobs.
Lamps and fixtures may be made of metals like bronze, brass or iron. Wall sconces add mood lighting, as do candle lamps or lanterns placed about the room.

English country style accessories may include antique clocks, metal planters of copper or iron, terra cotta pots, water fountains, bird houses, weather vanes and wind chimes.
Oriental rugs add a nice bit of color and warmth to bare wood floors.
Display antique china or blue and white pottery.
Paintings should be of landscapes with dogs or horses in them. Hunt scenes are very appropriate.
Vases of fresh flowers add a touch of the garden as well as color.
Portraits of family members and ancestors may adorn the table tops and the walls.
If you can have exposed beams on your ceiling, that is the perfect complement to the rest.

If you want a modern feel to your English country decor rather than traditional, keep your fabric choices to simple patterns and solids rather than the large floral prints. You want to create your depth with texture rather than prints.
Traditional style uses more open cabinets, collectibles, curtains and linens in the room than the modern version. Keep your window treatments more streamlined if you want a modern look, while maintaining the cozy feel.
So, if you want a cozy, welcoming, farmhouse style home, try your hand at English country decor.
