I would have to say that one of my favorite country living decorating themes would be Country Cottage, but it isn't always a very 'fitting' one for our ranch life (lots of dirt and animal messes!). No big deal, I use it anyway! The other theme I am drawn to, mostly out of practicality, is Farmhouse Style.
With Farmhouse Style, there isn't much 'bling', so to speak. Baseboards and moldings are very basic and that lends itself well to the way we live. My husband, Wade, ends up making most of these elements himself and uses plain, pine boards that we cut from the trees on our land. Its the fastest, easiest way to get the trim work up and finished. I am not a patient person, and wouldn't want to wait for fancier trim. I just want it up so that I can paint it or stain...then...done!
Wade probably would prefer to have our entire home done in the country western decorating style, but humors me and lives with the more 'girly' country cottage decorating feel I love. I try not to overdo it though and that is another reason I enjoy adding the farmhouse elements. That tones down the flowers and lace Cottage Style is known for.
Country western decor and cottage style blend together in our home, right beside it's Farmhouse elements. Using our favorite country living decorating themes together gives our home its own unique feel. Wade and I have compromised on a juxtaposition that is attractive and charming....to us...and that's who matters most, right?
Here is an example of the Farmhouse Style trimwork around the windows in our home. Plain and simple!

Don't be afraid to mix your favorite styles while decorating your country home. The result will be completely one of a kind combinations that please you while making guests feel comfortable and at ease. Another one of my favorite styles is Country French which finds its way into our home in many ways.
